Valproic acid, also know as 2-Propylvaleric acid, is a carboxylic acid derivative and a natural analogue of valleric acid.
It is used chiefly as an anticonvulsant drug in the treatment of epileptic seizures, especilly in the young. Often in combination with
other anti-convulsants like phenytoin and phenobarbital. It is also used as a mood-stabiliser, in the treatment of children with aggressive
behavioral patterns and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). It is also approved in th treatment of migranes,
bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.
Valproic acid is believed to exert its affects by increasing the concentration of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain .
GABA is a neurotransmitter, that aids in transmission of neuronal signals. Valproic acid has also been delivering a promising
results in trails studying treatment of certain solid tumours, colonic cancers, medulloblastomas, follicular thyroid cancer,
leukaemias and as a part of the multi=drug regimen used in Alzheimer's disease.
