What is TORCH Test And Its Importance

Torch Test is also called Torch Panel It is also called Torch Screen.

TORCH is a term that is used for a combined test where we detect multiple types of infections and their causative agents. The presence of IgM and IgG antibodies is measured against these various infective agents.

TORCH Stands for Followings Tests:

  1. T stands for Toxoplasma test: which is a parasitic disease.
  2. O stands for other infection: in this, we check for different test like: a) Syphilis Test: It is a bacterial disease b) Brucellosis Test: It is a bacterial disease also c) HIV Test: It is virus disease d) Epstein Bar virus Test: It is also virus e) Hepatitis B and C Test: It is also virus f) Parvo Virus Test: Also a virus infection g) Varicella Test: A Virus test
  3. R in TORCH test stands for Rubella Test: It is also viral
  4. C stands for (Cytomegalovirus Test) In short called CMV Test: It is also virus test.
  5. H stands for (Herpes Simplex Test) in short it is called HSV Test: Also a virus infection So in TORCH Test we detect for 12 different infections.

 Following is the diagnostic importance of the TORCH Test:

1) To screen Women who are planning to have a baby.

2) To screen Pregnant women.

3) It is helpful in the detection of Recent or past infections. In recent infection IgM antibody will be positive IgG antibody will be positive in past infection or in patients who recovered from the disease

4) It is helpful in babies to detect congenital Infection if symptoms are present. Like if a baby's head is small or large, or baby's weight is low, or seizures are present.

5) If a woman gets infected with certain germs during her pregnancy, then the chances are higher that the baby may also get infected while still in the womb. As the baby is more sensitive to harm from infection during the first 3 to 4 months of the pregnancy. This test screens infants for TORCH infections. These infections may lead to the following problems in the baby:

Birth defects, Delay in baby Growth,  Brain and nervous system problems.

Specimen collection for TORCH Test:

1) Collect 4 to 6 ml blood in Red top tube or Gel Tube.

2) Centrifuge the sample and collect serum for the test. The test is run on ELISA or any other advanced analyzer.
